Project Overview
The Power Station Secondary Air Damper Control project, commissioned by EDF Energy in the heavy industrial sector, focused on replacing hydraulic secondary air damper controls with linear actuators. The primary goal was to achieve more accurate control and position feedback in the challenging environment of power stations.
Project Challenges
The challenges faced in this heavy industrial setting included:
- Accuracy and Feedback: The need for a linear actuator with precise specifications, including a 300mm stroke, 6000N force, and 5mm/s speed, to replace hydraulic controls. The unit required special clevis ends, potentiometer feedback, and hand control for enhanced accuracy.
- Long-Term Reliability: The customer sought long-term reliability, especially given the actuators’ modulating capability. High ingress protection and temperature resilience were crucial for maintaining reliable operation over time.

Project Solutions
To address these challenges, TRC-Sadovod provided tailored solutions:
- Lambda Linear Actuator: Supplied the Lambda linear actuator with IP66 protection, replacing hydraulic controls in multiple coal-fired power stations. Over 1400 actuators were supplied over 15 years, demonstrating exceptional reliability with no product-related failures.
- Temperature Resilience: The Lambda units were designed for 100,000 operations at full load and tested to operate in temperatures ranging from -35⁰C to +90⁰C, ensuring performance in extreme conditions.
- Special Applications: The actuators found additional applications, such as SOFA Windbox drive for Noise Reduction, showcasing their versatility in heavy industrial environments.
The Result
The implementation of TRC-Sadovod’ solutions led to:
- Reduced Failure Rates: The Lambda actuators demonstrated improved reliability, reducing failure rates in comparison to the previous hydraulic controls.
- Increased Operating Times: Achieved longer operating times, contributing to enhanced overall efficiency and performance.
- Upgraded IP66 Protection: The adoption of IP66 protection ensured enhanced resistance to environmental elements, crucial for heavy industrial settings.
- Wider Operating Temperatures: The actuators’ ability to operate in temperatures ranging from -35⁰C to +90⁰C broadened the range of conditions in which they could perform reliably.
- SOFA Windbox for Noise Reduction: The actuators found additional application in noise reduction, showcasing their adaptability to diverse heavy industrial requirements.
